How to grow and avocado tree from seed

For the hobby gardener, growing an avocado tree is a rewarding experience. In most cases, the avocado tree is grown as a house plant and its shiny green foliage makes it ideal for this purpose. If you live in warmer climates, you can transplant it outdoors but you should know that they can take several years to grow to the point of producing fruit - a fruit that may not be as good as the commercially grown ones.

There are several methods for growing an avocado tree from seeds. I will share with you the method that has repeatedly worked successfully for me.

Instructions
Step 1
Select the avocado

Purchase avocadoes that are firm but ripe. You will know a ripe avocado by the look and feel. Ripe avocadoes may have a brownish color and depress  with a slight pressure using the thumb.

Step 2
Prepare the seed

Cut lengthwise all around the avocado. Take care not to cut the seed. With both hands gently pull each half of the avocado apart to reveal the seed. The seed may remain in one of the halves. Use a spoon to scoop it out. Using a dull knife, clean the seed of all flesh then rinse and pat dry with paper towel. Set aside.

Step 3
Setting the seed

Place four sheets of paper towels together and fold lengthwise then place inside and around the glass container. Fill with water then drain the water. Some of the water may remain trapped at the bottom but this is okay. Position the seed between the glass and the paper towel and place the glass in a cool, dry place away from direct light.

Step 4
Germination

Every 2 or 3 days fill the container with water and drain taking care not to dislodge the paper towel or the avocado seed. Within about 2 to 4 weeks the seed will split and start to sprout. Wait until you have about a 4 or 6 inch sprout, preferably with leaves, before potting.

Step 5
Potting

Place about 1 inch of gravel at the bottom of the pot and add potting soil. Carefully insert the transplant and water. Place in an area with bright but indirect sunlight. Enjoy the beauty of your avocado tree as it grows.
